Xiaomi Mi A1 – stock android with a lot of bang for the buck

The xiaomi mi a1 – Xiaomi’s first collaboration with google. The stock android expertence is amazing, but can it keep up with competition like the Huawei honor 7x?

Hardware:
The handset is well built with an aluminium build and a 5.5 inch screen on the front. The antenna lines can be seen on the gold and rose gold colour but are almost invisible on the black version. They are configured just like the iPhone 7. The camera is on the top left of the phone which I prefer instead of any other configuration. The home, back and recent haptic buttons on the front are, thankfully, back-lit, which makes it easy to see them in the dark. The fingerprint sensor is perfectly placed on the back where I prefer it. It also supports charging by type-c, but fast charging is not available.

Software:
The software is straight-out amazing. I hate the software skins on android in phones of companies like Huawei and LG. The stock android this phone just makes the experience so much more fluid, fast and amazing. This is one of the biggest advantages of the phone.

Cameras:
The primary and selfie camera are good for the price, but they’re not the best. The honor 7x does have better cameras for almost the same or less price.

Rear camera(s):
The photos come out good with good colour reproduction little or no noise during the day but, in low light conditions, there is some noise. As the phone has a dual camera configuration, there is also the option of portrait mode. Most of the times the photos come out great with the right amount of blurring and the phone mostly recognises the subjects, but, some times the phone just gets it wrong. Sometimes it also blurs out the edges of the subject, but, it does that only sometimes. Videos shot in 4k are pretty good, but in 1080p the footage is really bad.

Front camera:
The front camera is ok. In well-lighted conditions, the photos come out great, but in low-light conditions, the photos are not that good.

Display:
The display is quite big with a size of 5.5 inch, it has an IPS LCD panel which has a screen resolution of 1080p and a pixel density of 401 PPI. The colours are quite good and, all-in-all, the screen is pretty good.

Performance:
The xiaomi mi a1 is powered by a qualcomm snapdragon 625 chipset which is pretty good with power efficiency and has balanced performance. It has 4 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of ROM.

Multimedia:
There is only one speaker unit, which does get reasonably loud but the sound cracks at high volume, and thank god, they kept the headphone jack, not following the new trend. Another trend which the a1 did not follow, was the thinking of bezels in 2017 which its opponents such as the honor 7x, the honor 9i and others

Verdict:
The xiaomi mi a1 is a pretty good contender in the budget smartphone category. The build quality is top-notch. The results from the camera in well lit environment are very good. The performance is very good. The display is good as well. The software is starght-out amazing. You just can’t beat the no-nonsense stock android with those silly skins. The only place where it falls behind, are the bezels. All-in-all, it is a very strong contender in the budget smartphone segment and can give its opponents a hard time.
